§ 20-29. Duties generally.

  • (a)

    Every policeman shall hold himself in readiness at all times to answer the calls and obey the orders of his superior officers. He shall conform to the rules and regulations and observe the laws and ordinances of the city, and render his services to the city with zeal, courage, discretion and fidelity. If absent without leave, he shall be reported to the city manager.

    (b)

    It shall be the duty of the policemen to suppress all disturbances of the quiet and good order of the city and to arrest all offenders against quiet and good order, to prevent as far as possible all injury to city property, to report any unsafe condition in the streets and sidewalks of the city, and otherwise to perform the duties required by law of them.

    (c)

    The police shall see that all disturbances are prevented and suppressed. During the nighttime, they may examine all persons abroad whom they have reason to suspect of any unlawful designs, may disperse any unlawful assembly of three (3) or more persons, and enter any dwelling for the purpose of suppressing a riot or a breach of the peace therein.

    (d)

    All policemen while on duty shall examine in the nighttime all doors, gates and windows of dwellings and stores, to see that they are properly secured. They shall take special notice of vacant houses in order to prevent depredations and be vigilant to prevent fire or waste of city water.
